Lieutenant Adkins and his fellow soldiers took part in light hedgerow fighting that served to shake the division down and familiarize the troops and their officers with combat. The first real test came within weeks, when the 2nd Battalion, 317th Infantry, attacked high ground near Argentan during the drive to seal German forces in the Falaise Pocket. While scouting for mortar positions in the woods, Adkins met a group of Germans and shot one of them dead with his carbine. This baptism in blood settled the question faced by every novice combatant: He was cool under fire, capable of killing when facing the enemy. He later wrote, “It was a sickening sight, but having been caught up in the heat of battle, I didn’t have a reaction other than feeling I had saved my own life.”Thereafter, the 2nd Battalion, 317th Infantry, took part in bloody battles across France, sometimes coping with inept leadership and grievous losses, even as it took hills and towns away from the Germans. In the fighting graphically portrayed here, Adkins acted with skill and courage, placing himself at the forefront of the action whenever he could. Andy Adkins III has expertly and lovingly taken his Dad's WW2 diary of his experiences in the 317th Infantry Regiment and translated it into a moving experience for anyone interested in what the "Greatest Generation" went through fighting against Nazi Germany. From extremely bloody river crossings in the face of fierce German fire to the emotionally devastating experience of liberating barely alive concentration camp victims from Dachau, this book tells it how it was and what our "Dads" went through.I will have to admit to some personal bias. For the past few months, I have been trying to trace my Dad's wartime experiences through the 6 partially burned pages that were all that remained of his records from the 1973 National Archives fire. From them, I found out that he was with the 80th Infantry Division so I searched for that unit on the web. I found an unbelievably detailed 80th Division archive and contacted its owner, who happens to be Andy III, the author ! Andy has voluntarily become the Division's records custodian, and he has spent years scanning thousands of reports and documents pertaining to the 80th and has made them freely available to all of us !Andy helped me find my Dad's records and was even able to reconstruct his Bronze Star General Order for me, in addition to sending a photo I'm trying to identify to his contacts in Germany for their assistance (see attached photo of my Dad's unit to see if you can identify where it was taken). During this extensive search, we also discovered that Andy's Dad was my Dad's company commander and even that one of the pictures in his book was my Dad (page 146) !!With his kindness to me, his devotion to preserving the 80th Division's legacy, and his remarkably insightful book, Andy has demonstrated dedication above and beyond the call of duty.I highly recommend this book - I loved it !!
